OK before everyone starts sending me e-mails about their grandmother never having a phone and those people in North Korea not having phones can I explain what everyone connected really means.
Everyone connected day is concept day when they are as many connected phones as there are people on the planet. The fact is many of them will have more than one phone and some will not have phones at all. The point is that on that day (currently 11th June 2012, but this will change as we estimate better) will be a significant day for the Mobile phone industry and the population of the world. With nearly everyone connected via the voice and Internet the world will be very different. Information will be always be available to everyone. The concept should not be feared; it should be embraced because it has the potential to make all our lives easier.
So where did we get the stats shown here. The world population figures come from US Government Census Bureau and from that we derived that there are 2.44 additional people on the earth every second.
The phone population figures come from a Reuters article and the GSMA web site and in particular the following document from which we derived that there were 25.72 new connected phones every second.
The phone and population predictions are a pure linear projection. Now in reality you would expect the prediction to follow an 'S' shape for the phone growth. Currently the phone growth is on a weakly rising exponential, that is the beginning of the 'S' and you might expect the curve to flatten as it approaches 100% penetration. However, its more complex because penetration might well go above 100% - can this happen in a world context? I expect many to doubt it, but I think it really could happen because of low cost phones being sold - hence my feeling that a linear projection is as good a guess as anything. I guess this one can be debated.
